CURRICULUM
The Cahaba + UAB Rural Psychiatry Residency curriculum was created to mindfully utilize experiential learning in evidence-based psychiatric care modalities to address the modern realities of rural psychiatric practice. Using the Collaborative Care Model of integrated psychiatric mental healthcare as its foundation, our Longitudinal Comprehensive Rural Psychiatry (LCRP) experience allows residents to develop a connection to the communities they serve. Rural Psychiatry Residents learn how to implement biopsychosociospiritual assessment and treatment into their personal clinical practice, interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues, and their own lifelong learning.
ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING
Residents are empowered to utilize a myriad of resources provided to them for bedside and deskside learning. Throughout the year, residents engage in a number of learning modules through AMBOSS, MedMastery, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School. Additional resources are provided through the UAB Lister Hill Library, including Psychiatry Publishing, Stahl Online, and Psychotherapy.net.
JOURNAL CLUB AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
Residents are given extensive training in scientific literacy and are expected to complete scholarly activities throughout their training. Residents learn about seminal studies in psychiatry.
DIDACTIC LECTURES
AND WORKSHOPS
Interactive didactics in primary care and psychiatry are held to provide a basic foundational knowledge base. Workshops are held to further practice clinical skills such as de-escalation and safety, procedural skills, and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.
ADVOCACY AND LEADERSHIP
Residents are encouraged and supported to take on positions of leadership within the organization as well as through local, regional, and national organizations. Likewise, as servant leaders, residents are frequently asked to participate in local, state, and national mental health advocacy initiatives.

LIFELONG
LEARNING
As medicine advances, so too must our training paradigms. That is why our educational curriculum is designed to foster Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). Residents are assigned faculty advisors and together create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for themselves. This is a living document that allows residents and advisors to tailor the residents’ learning to their unique needs.
